BOCA
RATON, Fla. - To overcome the logistical difficulties of managing
hundreds of moving stores on more that 200 ships, the U.S. Navy
purchased the retail management program MaxPoint by DataMax System
Solutions.
The
U.S. Navy needed technology to streamline operations, maintain strict
controls and consistency, and the ability to evolve as requirements
change. DataMax's point-of-sale (POS) software, MaxPoint,
was able to deliver all requirements.
DataMax
installed MaxPoint as a POS and back office management tool, as
well as Symbol scanners, printers, and customer displays in stores
located on all Navy ships.
"There
are many difficulties associated with operating a store that is
constantly moving from one location to another, so we customized
MaxPoint to handle all of these concerns," said Elliott Wallace,
president and CEO of DataMax System Solutions. "Because
MaxPoint was developed using the latest technology, it is no problem
for us to adapt it to most any requirement a retailer, even a Navy
retailer, could have."
With
a store that could be in San Diego one week and Hong Kong the next,
keeping track of orders received, both partial and complete, and
of vendors all over the world is a real problem.
"Because
the Navy was operating on a system developed seven or eight years
ago, they were having problems making it adhere to new processes
required by the U.S. government," said Bill Kesl, vice president
at DataMax System Solutions. "They needed a new generation
of software that was flexible enough to customize and evolve as
their business evolves; that is why MaxPoint was the perfect choice
for them."
The
Navy also has unique purchasing, accounting, and reporting procedures
that had to be incorporated into the program. The Navy needs a system
they can rely on and that conforms to their requirements for unyielding
accountability of sales and inventory.
"We
customized MaxPoint to emulate the government's stringent accounting,
inventory and cash requirements from their existing POS program.
We also integrated specific forms and documents into MaxPoint to
make reporting easier for the Navy," said Kesl.
Some
of the other features of the Navy's new MaxPoint program include
the ability to automatically create a purchase order, receive merchandise
off a P.O. or requisition, keep track of partial shipments, generate
customized reports, and to track shipments received at locations
worldwide.
MaxPoint
is a powerful point-of-sale tool, developed using the newest 32-bit
code technology, which is ODPC compliant. The program can run on
any PC-based terminal and server platform including Microsoft operating
systems like Windows NT, Windows 95 and larger SQL databases. A
result of four years of development, MaxPoint's migration path is
open, making it easy to use on any system.
